House of Horrors: Aging Doesn't Have To Be Scary

It’s spooky season! We’ve made it to October, which is THE month for spooks, jumps, and scares. So I invite you to come to the SCARIEST haunted house of all. Grab your tickets and walk with me through the most unnerving experience you’ll ever have…
Enter If You Dare: Facing the Fear of Aging
Let’s set the scene.
You pull into the dimly lit, gravel parking surrounded by an eerie fog in the air. As you and your bestie get out of the car, you see a crooked, wooden sign. It points the way around the corner to the main entrance. Above the doorway, the sign reads
“ENTER HERE TO SEE YOURSELF FALL APART.”
You look cautiously at your friend, but step forward to the heavy doors. Before you pull back on the handle, you hear shouts from within.
“My face is melting!!”
“I look sunken and tired!!”
“My skin is so wrinkled!!”
“I’m too old, no one can help me now!!”
With hesitance, you each grip a handle and walk inside. Making your way down the long, pitch black foyer, the shouts become less audible as you move forward.
The Room of Sagging Secrets
You step in the first room and feel a heaviness pulling you down. Strong gusts of wind descend from the ceiling and you struggle to stay upright. You can feel your skin flapping, and as you struggle to look forward and around, you see distorting mirrors that reflect sagging eyes and your sinking jawline back to you. “WHAT?! That isn’t what I look like!” you shriek. Your cries are met with whispers from shadowed ghouls standing in the corner, whispering “Just wait, it’s your future.”
You choke back a sob as you leave this first room and enter the second:
The Corridor of Lines and Lies
In this devastating room of horror, you glance around to the exaggeration of what you already know to be starting on your face. The walls are adorned with masks morphing into grotesque, deepened expressions. Severe crevices etch onto their surfaces. Angry furrow lines, aged forehead lines, and such deep crows feet that a normally happy smile, on this face, looks more like a grimace. Painful looking lines are cracked into the space around the lips. The masks jump out as you walk through, and you find yourself touching your own face to check your memory.
The lined masks whisper to you “Just wait, I’m coming for you.”
You get to the end of hallway, and open the door to the next room:
Sunken Souls Dungeon
As you enter, you feel a sweeping cold surrounding you. You immediately see your breath ahead of you as you walk further down the stairs. You reach back for your friend, but she is not within reach. You pass darkened ghostly figures fluttering past the walls on the way down, and you’re met with a mirror at the bottom. What you see reflected back to you isn’t yourself at all, but a skeletonized version. Hollowed, anquished eyes peer back at you through the glass. You have harsh cheek bones that jut out into angular points. I
t’s painful to even look at, and as you reach up to reassure yourself that “No, this isn’t reality”, you are alarmed by the cold touch to your skin– it feels like ice. This dungeon is freezing, and your face feels every bit as cool and tired and the mirror shows. As you look around for others, the shadowed figures whooshing by obscure your view. Your step hastens to leave, but each mirror that you pass shows you more and more like a skeleton and less like yourself.
“We have to be almost done!?” you exclaim to your friend as the two of you ride the elevator back up. You’re reassured that your friend looks normal, though, you can’t quite seem to shake the sad, sunken version of yourself you just witnessed.
Brittle, Broken, and Brown: The Final Room
You exit the elevator and are momentarily calmed. What looks like a warm and glowing room feels like a relief after such darkness. You enter with a blossoming sense of ease, and feel warmth in your fingertips as you pass through.
This relief is short lived, because the ground starts to rumble and crack, and your sense of ease turns to dread as you stumble forward. The floor, walls, and ceilings start to crumble. You start to feel a stiffening heat blanket you. The brightness of the room that started as inviting, shifts into an unbearable, overwhelming light. You squeeze your eyes shut for protection. When you can feel the light and heat dim, you open your eyes to see giant textured paintings of people reaching out in pain.
The first is a woman with such cracked skin, it looks painful to touch. You find yourself reaching out anyways and as your fingertips brush the canvas, a blood curdling scream shouts “I should have taken care of my skin!”
Your arm crashes back to your body, and you peer to the next painting. A man looking straight at you, with skin darkened and thick like leather. From him, you hear “If only I’d known about sunscreen!”
The last painting you pass is of two women sobbing, a patchwork of brown and yellowed pigment covering their faces. The only contrast is the stream of tears running down their cheeks. In this photo, you hear their cries– “HELP US!!! IT HURTS!!!”.
The Horizon Med Spa Team: Your Guides to Confidence and Care
Before the sense of dread takes over, you see the bright red EXIT sign just up ahead. You grab your friend’s hand and RUN! Now, finding safety in the cool night air, you take a deep breath. You both walk towards the table at the end of the path.
Here, sit Trent, Licensed Esthetician, Kelly, Nurse Injector, and Brandi, Women’s Health Practitioner. They sit under a sign that boasts “Horizon Med Spa & Wellness”, wearing inviting smiles on their faces. The booth is adorned with glowy twinkle lights and hope. They offer you a cup of hot chocolate to push out the cold and fear left in your trembling heart. They each stand up to offer a warm hug, and reassure you “You are beautiful! Everyone ages, but we can help soften this journey! You are in good hands with us.”
After kindly giving you some hope, they extend to you goodie bags full of skincare samples, beautiful before and afters, and their cards to schedule an appointment. “We will give you all the tools you need to feel empowered and beautiful as you age, not frightened.”
As you make your way back to the parking lot, you say to your friend, “Not a chance we’re coming back to this Haunted House, but we are DEFINITELY calling Horizon Med Spa!”
