What is Facial Balancing?
Facial balancing is a common buzz word being utilized all over social media. This term is often utilized by aesthetic providers who are referring to the most natural way to treat an aging face - using facial balancing with fillers, neuromodulators, and medical-grade skincare. This is achieved by not only injecting one individual area of the face and instead, but injecting the face cumulatively to make sure all areas of the face are being addressed in unison to help establish overall facial balancing.
In this blog post, you can learn about the aging process, how facial balancing works, and common facial balancing techniques.
The Aging Process: Why Our Faces Lose Balance
As we age, there are three major things happening to our faces that can contribute to our physical signs of aging and a loss of facial balance.
Our bone structure shrinks.
All of our bones decrease in structural support as we age & this includes the bones of our face. As our skull slowly reabsorbs and becomes less supportive, our skin begins to visibly sag.
Our superficial fat pads descend or drop down.
This can begin to be noticeable in our midface down to our jowls. This area of our face is highly mobile and can begin to show noticeable signs of aging in our late 20s to early 30s.
Our skin loses collagen and elastin.
Collagen and elastin are essential for the skin to remain thick, wrinkle free, supple, hydrated, & youthful. Collagen production in the skin declines around age 25 and continues to decrease by 1% to 2% every year after.
How Facial Balancing Works
To achieve facial balancing, we want to address the face as a whole. Oftentimes clients come in with one key concern that bothers them the most. As an aesthetic provider, it is our role to provide each client with education on why these symptoms of aging are happening, what is causing them, and the best way to address them.
For example: If a client comes in wanting to fix their marionette lines (the area below the corners of your mouth), placing filler in that area more than likely will actually look worse than doing nothing at all. Marionette lines are an area that lose volume over time. This volume loss is intensified due to the midface superficial fat pads dropping down as we age and putting added weight on the marionette area. The area along our jawline near our jowls also loses some of its bone structure, therefore further losing support that the marionette area so desperately needs to not look sad and saggy.
The severity of a marionette line as we age is oftentimes fairly minimal. However this area is being severely accentuated by all the volume loss happening in our faces surrounding that area. Therefore, the best way to address the marionettes is by assessing the face as a whole and supporting the bone volume loss surrounding the marionettes first. The most common areas requiring treatment before marionettes are lateral cheeks, temples, and the prejowl sulcus. These are areas that experience bone loss most commonly & restoring them first will allow us to treat the face holistically and help restore balance to the face that it once had at its most youthful state. After the surrounding areas have been supported we will go directly to the marionettes and use a soft filler to smooth them out as naturally as possible.
Facial Balancing Achieves Natural Results
The key component to a successful facial balancing treatment is that you don't want to see where the filler starts and stops. When each area of volume loss in the face is supported together, nobody will be able to quite put their finger on if you had work done or not, because one specific area won't look abruptly altered. The goal is to look like your skin is extra glowy, you look happier, or like you got some extra sleep! We don't want people to know you got cheek filler specifically...just that you look more youthful today.
Common Approaches to Facial Balancing
I bet I know what you're thinking next! What do I need to achieve facial balancing, how much will it cost me, & how often will I need to keep up with it? There are three key ingredients to help achieve the most natural and balanced look with your aesthetic treatments. Those three key components include: fillers/biostimulators, routine neuromodulator treatments & medical grade skincare. Using all three of these ingredients together for facial balancing will allow you to age better than all the other gals your age & help allow each facial balancing treatment to look as undetectable to the naked eye as possible. So let's break these three steps down individually and the importance of their role.
Dermal Fillers and Biostimulators:
Dermal Fillers and Biostimulators are the most important components to facial balancing. These injectables restore volume loss to our bone structure and the deep fat pads of our face. Dermal fillers are composed of hyaluronic acid, which is found naturally in our body and becomes less prominent over time. By strategically injecting fillers into specific areas of the face, we can restore volume, contour, and refine proportions to create facial balancing with filler.
Biostimulators can be used all over the face, like filler. However, the benefit of biostimulators is that they work by stimulating the body to create the volume on its own in areas of loss. This is a more natural way to replace the loss of volume in the face & pairs really nicely with strategic filler placement. Here are some common techniques used in facial balancing with fillers:
Cheek Filler:
Restoring definition to the cheekbones are essential components to maintain a youthful face.
Chin Filler:
A recessed chin can throw off facial balance, making the jawline less defined. Fillers can be used to rebuild the chin's projection and smooth chin texture/dimpling.
Jawline Contouring:
Fillers can be seamlessly placed along the jawline to enhance definition, and create a more contoured appearance.
Lip Enhancement:
Full, hydrated lips are a key component of facial balancing. Fillers can be used to add volume, define borders, and correct asymmetry. Lip filler is also crucial to aid in decreasing the production of smokers lines/perioral lines. Lip filler helps maintain the structure of the lip tissue which eliminates the ability for lip lines to cut into the lips and cause bleeding lip stick in an aging lip.
Temple Restoration:
Volume deficient temples can contribute to an aged or peanut appearance. Fillers and biostimulators can be injected into the temples to restore fullness.
Neuromodulators (Botox, Dysport, Daxxify)
The next step to treat the face as a whole is neuromodulator injections. The most common neuromodulators are Botox, Dysport and Daxxify. A Neuromodulator treatment works to smooth resting texture lines in the face that are caused by muscle movement. The most common areas we target with this treatment are forehead lines, scowl lines or 11’s & crows feet. This is a crucial step to help you achieve smooth, glowing skin and a balanced face. Restoring volume loss with fillers is amazing, however we need the skin to match the youthful volume we just replaced in order to keep you looking natural and to keep your facial balancing treatments looking undetectable to others.
Medical-Grade Skincare:
Medical grade skincare products are regulated by the FDA, ensuring that they meet the safest standards and are the quality that the company claims. Drug store products are not studied for their effectiveness to the same degree, therefore can be very misleading on whether or not they are actually beneficial for you or harmful. In my professional opinion, the most important products I recommend every client uses to slow and prevent signs of aging are: Vitamin C, Retinol, & Sunscreen. These three ingredients are the trifecta to an effective anti-aging regimen and everyone is a candidate to use them. Pairing these products with other facial balancing techniques will help maintain your facial balancing results.
Vitamin C and Sunscreen
Vitamin c & sunscreen work hand in hand to protect you during the daytime from damaging effects of the sun. Sun exposure breaks down our skin's collagen and elastin, it can cause hyperpigmentation (sun spots), it causes fine lines and wrinkles, and so much more. Vitamin c is a powerful antioxidant, therefore helping to neutralize the free radicals from sun exposure that causes oxidative stress to the skin leading to premature aging. Sunscreen works to compliment vitamin c by blocking UV rays from reaching the skin and deflecting the UV rays away like a shield. Pretty cool stuff!
Retinol
The final ingredient in the anti-aging trifecta is retinol. This powerful ingredient is going to be used at nighttime to repair damaged skin and encourage cellular turnover which will stimulate the production of new collagen and elastin needed to maintain healthy youthful skin. These three ingredients are the cornerstone to the perfect at home anti-aging regimen.
