Spray tans are coming to Shawnee (and already glowing at the Plaza)
First, the news: custom spray tans are coming soon to our Shawnee location. They have been a client favorite at our Country Club Plaza location for a while now, and we could not be more excited to bring that same glow to Shawnee just in time for the holidays. If you are on the Kansas side, your standing tan appointment is about to get a lot closer to home.
What a custom airbrush spray tan is: the short answer
A spray tan gives you sun-kissed color without any UV exposure. Our artists hand-apply the color with an airbrush, so it is matched to your skin tone and blended evenly, with none of the orange or streaks that give a tan away.
The science is simple. Sunless tanners use an ingredient called DHA (dihydroxyacentone), which reacts with the amino acids on the outermost layer of your skin to create a temporary bronze. It is not a stain that sits on top, and it is not sun damaged. It develops over a few hours and then fades naturally as your skin renews itself.
At Horizon, we use NUDA spray tan solutions, which are vegan, cruelty-free, and formulated with skin-loving ingredients that hydrate while they color. Because we customize the DHA level from 6% to 18% you choose exactly how much color you want, from a soft, barley-there glow to a deep bronze, in either our Classic or Rapid formulas.
Why a spray tan beats the sun
Here is the part worth saying plainly: there is no such thing as a safe tan from UV. A tan from the sun or a tanning bed is your skin responding to damage, and the damage adds up as premature aging and skin cancer risk. This is why the American Cancer Society and dermatologists point to sunless tanning as the safer way to get the look of a tan. A spray tan gives you the glow with none of the UV.
One honest note so you can get the most out of yours: a spray tan is color only, not sun protection. Keep wearing a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher when you are outdoors, spray tan or not.
How to prep for your best tan
Ninety percent of flawless, long-lasting tan is what you do before you ever walk in. To ge the most even, longest-wearing color:
Exfoliate the day before or the morning of, focusing on the knees, elbows, ankles. And hands where color grabs hardest.
Shave or wax at least 24 hours ahead, not the day of, so pores have time to close.
Come with clean, bare skin. No lotion, oil, makeup, perfume, or deodorant on the day of your appointment. Those create barrier that keeps color from developing evenly.
Wear loose, dark clothing and flip-flops to your appointment so nothing rubs the fresh tan.
Not sure what your skin needs? Our artists will walk you through it. Prep is half the reason a professional tan looks so much better than a bottle at home.
How to make your tan last through the holidays
A spray tan typically last about seven to ten days, and with the right aftercare you can stretch every one of them, To keep your glow going through a busy season:
Wait to shower for the time your artist recommends, which depends on weather you chose the Classic or Rapid formula. When you do, keep the first few showers quick and cool, and pat dry rather than rubbing.
Moisturize morning and night. Hydrated skin holds color far longer than dry skin, which flakes and takes the tan with it.
Skip the long soaks. Hot baths, chlorine pools, hot tubs, and heavy sweating all break color down faster. Rinse and moisturize after workouts.
Be gentle. Avoid exfoliating scrubs, loofahs, and anything with a harsh cleanser between tans, since exfoliating is exactly how you take a tan off.
Rebook on a rhythm. The easiest way to look effortlessly glowing all season is a standing appointment every week to ten days, so you are always topped up, never patchy.
That last one is the secret. A tan is not a one-time event during the holidays, it is a small ritual, and it is a lot easier to keep up when it is already on the calendar.
