If you only make one skincare change this year, make it daily sunscreen. Here's what SPF actually does, the difference between chemical and mineral formulas, and how to choose the right sunscreen for your skin type.

IN THIS BLOG POST:

Sun protection is one of the most important — and most overlooked — steps in skincare. While many people only reach for sunscreen at the beach, at the pool, or during summer vacations, daily SPF use is essential year-round for maintaining healthy skin and preventing long-term damage.

From premature aging to skin cancer prevention, sunscreen does far more than stop sunburns. But with so many options on the market — chemical, physical, and mineral sunscreens — it can be confusing to know which formula is best for your skin.

At Horizon Med Spa & Wellness in Kansas City, sun protection is the foundation of every facial, peel, and treatment plan we build. Here's what you need to know about SPF, and how to choose a sunscreen you'll actually wear every day.

What Does SPF Actually Mean?

SPF stands for "Sun Protection Factor." It measures how well a sunscreen protects your skin from UVB rays, the type of ultraviolet radiation primarily responsible for sunburns and skin cancer.

  • SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays.

  • SPF 50 blocks about 98% of UVB rays.

  • SPF 100 blocks about 99% of UVB rays.

No sunscreen blocks 100% of UV rays, which is why reapplication is just as important as the SPF number itself. The golden rule: apply two finger lengths of sunscreen 15 minutes before sun exposure, then reapply every 2 hours with normal sun exposure, or every 80 minutes after sweating or swimming. Always reapply immediately after towel drying out of the water.

Don't forget the spots most people miss: your ears, lips, the tops of your feet, your scalp along your part, and the backs of your hands.

Dermatologists generally recommend a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every single day — even when it's cloudy, rainy, or snowing — to protect against both UVA and UVB rays.

Why Daily SPF Is So Important

1. Prevents Premature Aging

Sun exposure is the leading cause of visible skin aging. UV rays break down collagen and elastin, leading to fine lines and wrinkles, sagging, dark spots, and uneven texture. In fact, it's estimated that up to 80–90% of visible facial aging is caused by sun exposure rather than natural aging alone.

2. Reduces Skin Cancer Risk

Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide, and UV exposure is a major risk factor. Consistent sunscreen use significantly reduces the risk of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers.

3. Protects Against Hyperpigmentation

If you struggle with acne scars, melasma, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, sunscreen is essential. Sun exposure can deepen discoloration and make brightening treatments like chemical peels and facials less effective. Daily SPF helps minimize that effect.

4. Maintains Results From Skincare Treatments

Using retinoids, acids, vitamin C, lasers, or chemical peels without SPF leaves your skin more vulnerable to UV damage. If you've invested in treatments like SkinPen microneedling or IPL, sunscreen is how you protect those results.

UVA vs. UVB Rays: What's the Difference?

Not all UV rays are the same.

UVB rays:

  • Cause sunburns.

  • Play a major role in skin cancer.

  • Are strongest during midday sun.

UVA rays:

  • Penetrate deeper into the skin.

  • Cause premature aging and pigmentation.

  • Are present year-round, even through windows.

This is where "broad-spectrum" comes into play: a broad-spectrum sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB rays, which is why it's the only kind worth buying.

Chemical vs. Mineral Sunscreen: Which Is Right for You?

One of the biggest sunscreen misconceptions is that "physical" and "mineral" are different categories. In reality, mineral sunscreens are a type of physical sunscreen. The real difference is between a chemical sunscreen and a mineral sunscreen.

Chemical Sunscreens

Chemical sunscreens use active ingredients that absorb UV rays into the skin and convert them into heat before they can cause damage.

Pros:

  • Lightweight feel.

  • Blends easily into the skin.

  • Usually invisible on deeper skin tones.

  • Great under makeup.

Cons:

  • May irritate sensitive skin.

  • Can sting around the eyes.

  • Some people experience breakouts or redness.

Best for:

  • Oily skin types.

  • Acne-prone skin that dislikes heavy textures.

  • Medium to deep skin tones concerned about a white cast.

  • People who wear makeup daily.

Physical/Mineral Sunscreens

Physical or mineral sunscreens sit on the skin's surface and reflect or scatter UV rays. They use mineral ingredients like zinc oxide (including non-nano zinc oxide) and titanium dioxide.

Pros:

  • Gentle on sensitive skin.

  • Works immediately after application.

  • Less likely to irritate eczema or rosacea.

  • Often preferred post-procedure.

Cons:

  • Can feel thicker.

  • May leave a white cast.

  • Some formulas pill under makeup.

Best for:

  • Sensitive skin.

  • Rosacea-prone skin.

  • Children and babies.

  • Post-treatment or compromised skin barriers.

  • People with eczema.

How to Choose the Best Sunscreen for Your Skin Type

There's no universal "best sunscreen." The right SPF depends on your skin type, concerns, and lifestyle.

Sensitive Skin

Mineral sunscreens are usually the safest choice because zinc oxide is soothing and less reactive.

Acne-Prone Skin

Look for lightweight, non-comedogenic formulas. Gel chemical sunscreens often work well, though some acne-prone users prefer mineral formulas with zinc for its anti-inflammatory benefits.

Dry Skin

Cream-based sunscreens with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid or ceramides can provide extra moisture.

Deeper Skin Tones

Many traditional mineral sunscreens leave a gray or chalky cast. Newer tinted mineral formulas are often more cosmetically elegant.

Rosacea or Eczema

Mineral SPF is generally recommended because it's less likely to sting or trigger flare-ups.

Common Sunscreen Mistakes (and How to Fix Them)

Even people who wear sunscreen often use it incorrectly.

Not Applying Enough

Most adults need about 1/4 teaspoon for the face (or two finger lengths) and a shot-glass amount for the body. The SPF in your makeup is not enough to protect your skin on its own.

Forgetting to Reapply

Sunscreen should be reapplied every 2 hours outdoors — more often if swimming or sweating, and immediately after towel drying. A brush-on SPF like Colorescience is great for reapplying over makeup, but you still need a standalone SPF as your base layer to ensure full protection.

Skipping SPF Indoors

UVA rays penetrate windows, which means your skin is still exposed while driving or sitting near sunlight indoors.

Only Using SPF in Summer

UV damage happens year-round, even on cloudy, rainy, or snowy days. UV rays penetrate clouds and reflect off snow — you are not exempt from winter sunburns!

Protecting Your Skin Year-Round in Kansas City

Sunscreen is not just a beach-day product. It's one of the most effective tools for protecting your skin's health and appearance long-term — through Kansas City summers on the patio and bright, snowy winters alike.

Whether you choose a lightweight chemical sunscreen or a gentle mineral formula, the most important thing is consistency. The best sunscreen is the one you'll actually wear every day.

And if you're chasing that sought-after bronzed glow? Fake it, don't bake it. A custom spray tan gives you the color without the damage, keeping your skin young and healthy for as long as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sunscreen and SPF

What SPF should I use every day?

Dermatologists recommend a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher daily, even in winter and on cloudy days. Broad-spectrum means it protects against both UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays.

Is mineral or chemical sunscreen better?

Neither is universally better — it depends on your skin. Mineral SPF is gentler for sensitive, rosacea-prone, or post-treatment skin, while chemical SPF tends to feel lighter and blend more invisibly, especially on deeper skin tones.

How often should I reapply sunscreen?

Every 2 hours with normal sun exposure, every 80 minutes if you're sweating or swimming, and immediately after towel drying. Apply your first layer 15 minutes before heading outside.

Do I need sunscreen indoors or in the car?

Yes. UVA rays pass through windows, so driving and sitting near sunny windows still exposes your skin to the rays responsible for premature aging and pigmentation.

Is the SPF in my makeup enough?

No. Most people apply far too little makeup to reach the labeled SPF protection. Use a standalone sunscreen as your base, then treat SPF makeup or a brush-on mineral powder as a bonus layer for reapplication.
