The Best Fall Skin Treatments: When to Schedule Laser, Peels, and Microneedling in Kansas City

Summer left a few surprises on your skin. Here are the best fall skin treatments for pigment, texture, and fine lines, and exactly when to book each one.
IN THIS BLOG POST:
Did you have too much fun in the sun? A couple extra drinks at the lake and forgot to reapply? Did your melasma flare?
Oftentimes after summer, we end up with a few new surprises on our skin that we didn't have before. Summer can bring on pigment, but also acne, dullness, congestion, and even new fine lines you didn't notice in the spring. Let's chat about what fall should look like for your skin, and when scheduling each treatment is ideal.
The Quick Answer: Best Fall Skin Treatments
The best fall skin treatments are IPL for sun spots and redness, the VI Peel for melasma and acne marks, SkinPen or Morpheus8 microneedling for texture and firmness, CO2 laser resurfacing for wrinkles and sun damage, and laser hair removal. Fall is the ideal time because these treatments work best on untanned skin and need sun avoidance while you heal. In Kansas City, where it often stays warm and sunny well into October, most people get the best results starting IPL and laser treatments in October or November.
Why Fall Is Peel and Laser Season
The best fall skin treatments are the ones that don't play well with the sun. IPL, chemical peels, microneedling, CO2 laser, and laser hair removal all work better, and heal better, when your skin isn't tan and you're spending less time outdoors. Cooler months give your skin the time and protection it needs to recover, which is why we call this time of year peel and laser season. If summer left you with sun damage, our guide to treating sun damage and sunspots goes even deeper.
Start With an Annual Skin Check
First things first: I always encourage a recent annual skin check. Extra sun likes to bring unusual pigment to the surface, so it's always a good idea to have any new spots on your body looked at. The American Academy of Dermatology also recommends regular self-checks between visits.
This is especially important if there's something you want removed with a CO2 laser. For example, if a new mole or freckle recently popped up and you want it gone, I'd like you to have it checked by your dermatologist at your yearly exam first.
Your Consultation: Building a Fall Treatment Plan
After your skin check, the next step is for us to meet for a consultation. We'll sit down, talk through your concerns, and go over what bothers you most. I'll often write out a plan with a month-by-month breakdown of which treatment is best when, built around your schedule.
There is no right or wrong month for treatment. It all depends on your schedule, holiday plans, and travel. Let's get into the best treatments to do in the fall and winter.
Which Fall Treatment Is Right for Your Skin Concern?
Start with what bothers you most. Here's how each treatment lines up with the most common post-summer concerns.
Skin concern | Best fall treatment | Sun avoidance after | Best time to book |
Sun spots and brown spots | IPL | About 1 to 2 weeks | Once your tan fades, usually October to November |
Redness and broken capillaries | IPL | About 1 to 2 weeks | October to November |
Melasma | VI Peel | Until peeling finishes | Fall and winter |
Acne and acne marks | VI Peel | Until peeling finishes | Fall and winter |
Dullness and congestion | VI Peel or SkinPen | 5 to 7 days for SkinPen | Anytime this fall |
Texture and large pores | SkinPen | 5 to 7 days | Anytime this fall |
Laxity and crepey skin | Morpheus8 | 5 to 7 days | Anytime this fall |
Wrinkles, lip lines, scarring, severe sun damage | CO2 laser resurfacing | Strict, during healing | Fall and winter |
Unwanted hair | Laser hair removal | Avoid tanning between sessions | Start now for a hair-free summer |
Your provider will confirm the right fit at your consultation, since many people do best with a combination.
IPL for Sun Spots and Redness
Intense pulsed light (IPL) is an energy treatment that targets the reds and browns in your skin. The light is attracted to color, so it finds pigment and brown spots and draws them to the surface, where they flake off and fade. For redness, it helps "seal off" the vascular supply, improving broken capillaries and diffuse redness.
Because IPL is attracted to color, it's best done after your summer tan has faded. A tan, spray tan, or extra color in the skin can get in the way. I generally recommend waiting until October or November to start, especially if you rode the warm weather past Labor Day. This is one of the treatments I personally do every fall. VI Peel for Melasma, Acne Marks, and Dull Skin
The VI Peel is one of my favorite chemical peels. It's a medium-depth peel with a numbing agent built into the solution, which is a huge reason I love it. (If you've ever had a spicy chemical peel, you know.)
It's a great option for:
Melasma and darker skin types
Acne and acne marks
Anyone who just wants to shed the dead and refresh dull skin
The VI Peel also comes in several formulations tailored to your skin, so it isn't a one-size-fits-all peel. It's ideal for fall because a peel creates a controlled injury, which makes your skin more sensitive to the sun. Staying out of the sun while you flake and peel lets your barrier heal properly. Explore our chemical peels.
Microneedling: SkinPen and Morpheus8
Microneedling is the most flexible treatment on this list, but it's still best done when you aren't spending much time in the sun.
SkinPen
SkinPen creates tiny controlled injuries in the skin to stimulate collagen and elasticity. It's great for texture and pores, and a good starting point for anyone new to aesthetics who wants something on the lower end of downtime.
Morpheus8
Morpheus8 is like SkinPen, with radiofrequency (RF) added. The heat from the RF helps tighten skin and address laxity.
With either treatment, plan to stay out of the sun for 5 to 7 days, but downtime is quick compared to other options. See SkinPen and Morpheus8 at Horizon, or compare options in CO2 laser vs. Morpheus8.
CO2 Laser Resurfacing
CO2 laser resurfacing is a treatment we really want to keep to the fall and winter months, unless you stay out of the sun most of the year. CO2 is a fractional ablative laser, which means it leaves healthy tissue between treated areas to help you recover faster.
This is my favorite treatment for overall skin quality, lip lines, wrinkles, scarring, and severe sun damage. Staying out of the sun afterward is essential. And for comfort, you won't want to walk out of a hot laser treatment into more heat. That cool fall air feels nice. Learn more about CO2 laser resurfacing.
Laser Hair Removal: Start Now, Smooth by Summer
Like IPL, laser hair removal works best when there's no extra pigment in the skin, so you don't want to be tan going in or spending a lot of time in the sun afterward.
Fall is also the smartest time to start. Laser hair removal often takes 6 to 8 sessions, so beginning now means you'll be hair-free by next summer. Plan accordingly. Explore laser hair removal.
Can You Combine Fall Skin Treatments?
Yes, and most of the best fall plans do. Summer usually leaves more than one concern behind, so we often space a few treatments across the season instead of relying on just one.
A few common pairings:
IPL plus a VI Peel: IPL clears brown spots and redness, then a peel refines tone and texture.
SkinPen or Morpheus8 plus IPL: Microneedling builds collagen while IPL targets pigment.
CO2 laser on its own: CO2 is our most intensive option, so it's usually the anchor of a winter plan rather than stacked with other treatments.
Treatments are spaced out so your skin fully heals between them. Your provider will map out the order and spacing for you at your consultation.
How to Prep Your Skin Before a Fall Treatment
A little prep goes a long way toward better results and an easier recovery:
Let your tan fade completely. This matters most for IPL and laser hair removal. Skip spray tans and self-tanner before those appointments too.
Stay out of the sun. Avoid direct sun exposure leading up to your treatment, and wear SPF every day.
Tell us about your skincare and medications. Some products, like retinoids and exfoliating acids, may need to be paused before peels, microneedling, or laser. We'll give you specific instructions.
Get any new spots checked first. If something new has appeared, see your dermatologist before we treat it.
Plan your downtime. Look at your calendar for events, travel, and outdoor plans so we can schedule around them.
Your Fall and Winter Treatment Timeline
Here's a simple way to think about timing:
Now: Annual skin check, consultation, and your first laser hair removal session
Anytime this fall: SkinPen or Morpheus8, with 5 to 7 days of sun avoidance
Once your tan fades (usually October to November): IPL for sun spots and redness
Fall and winter: VI Peel and CO2 laser resurfacing, when it's easiest to stay out of the sun while you heal
And whatever you book, daily SPF protects your results. Here's how to choose the right sunscreen for your skin type.
Planning Treatments Around the Holidays
The easiest way to plan is to work backward from your biggest events. Think holiday parties, family photos, travel, and New Year's Eve.
Treatments with quick downtime, like SkinPen, Morpheus8, and IPL, fit easily between fall plans.
Peels and CO2 laser need more healing time, so book them well ahead of any event where you want to look your best, or save them for the quieter weeks after the holidays.
A January CO2 treatment is a favorite for many of our patients. The holidays are behind you, the weather keeps you indoors, and you're glowing by spring.
Not sure how much time you need? Bring your calendar to your consultation and we'll build your plan around it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Fall Skin Treatments
What are the best skin treatments to get in the fall?
IPL, chemical peels like the VI Peel, microneedling with SkinPen or Morpheus8, CO2 laser resurfacing, and laser hair removal. All of them heal best when your skin isn't tan and you're spending less time in the sun.
Why should you wait until fall for laser treatments?
Lasers and IPL are attracted to pigment, so a tan increases risk and can reduce results. Most treatments also require sun avoidance afterward, which is much easier in cooler months.
When is the best time to get IPL?
Usually October or November, once your summer tan has fully faded. IPL works best when there's no extra color in the skin, including spray tan.
Is the VI Peel good for melasma?
Yes. The VI Peel is a medium-depth peel that works well for melasma and darker skin types, as well as acne and acne marks. It also includes a numbing agent, so it's more comfortable than many peels.
How long should I stay out of the sun after microneedling?
Plan on 5 to 7 days after SkinPen or Morpheus8. Downtime is quick compared to CO2 laser or a medium-depth peel.
When should I start laser hair removal to be ready for summer?
Start in the fall. Most people need 6 to 8 sessions, so beginning now gives you time to finish before next summer.
Can I get IPL if I have melasma?
It depends on your skin. Heat and light can sometimes aggravate melasma, which is why we often lean on the VI Peel for melasma-prone skin. Your provider will decide what's safest for you at your consultation.
Can I get laser or IPL with a spray tan?
No. Because IPL and laser hair removal are attracted to color, any tan, including a spray tan or self-tanner, should be completely gone before your appointment.
Do fall skin treatments hurt?
Most are very manageable. The VI Peel has a numbing agent built into the solution, and treatments like microneedling and CO2 laser are done with numbing for comfort. Your provider will walk you through what to expect.
How much do fall skin treatments cost in Kansas City?
The cost depends on the treatment, the area, and how many sessions you need. At Horizon Med Spa & Wellness, we provide a personalized quote and treatment plan at your complimentary consultation.
Is it too late to start treatments in winter?
Not at all. Winter is ideal for peels and CO2 laser resurfacing, since it's easy to stay out of the sun while you heal. The key is finishing your sun-sensitive treatments before spring and summer return.
