How to Time Your Aesthetic Treatments Before an Event: A Kansas City Med Spa Guide

Wedding, vacation, family photos, or a holiday party on the calendar? Here's exactly when to book each treatment so you show up glowing, not red, peeling, or irritated.
IN THIS BLOG POST:
Whether you're getting ready for a wedding, vacation, family photos, a big birthday, the holiday season, or simply a special night out, timing your aesthetic treatments can make all the difference.
The goal is to have your skin glowing, your brows perfectly shaped, and your tan looking natural. Not to be dealing with redness, sensitivity, peeling, or irritation on the day of your event.
Here's my guide to when you should schedule some of our most popular aesthetic treatments before your big event.
The Quick Answer: When to Book Treatments Before an Event
Book microneedling 1 to 2 weeks before your event, a dermaplane facial 3 to 7 days before, a brow wax 3 to 5 days before, a Hydrafacial 2 to 5 days before, and a spray tan 24 to 48 hours before. If you want collagen-building results from microneedling, start a series about 6 months out. And never try a brand-new treatment or provider right before an important event.
Your Pre-Event Treatment Timeline at a Glance
Treatment | When to book | Why that timing |
Microneedling (collagen series) | Start about 6 months before | Gives your skin time to heal and build collagen between sessions |
Microneedling (single glow treatment) | 7 to 14 days before | Redness, tightness, and flaking need time to settle |
Dermaplane facial | 3 to 7 days before | Lets any temporary redness or sensitivity calm down |
Brow wax | 3 to 5 days before | Redness fades while brows still look freshly shaped |
Hydrafacial | 2 to 5 days before | Little to no downtime, with a fresh, hydrated glow |
Spray tan | 24 to 48 hours before | Enough time to develop without starting to fade |
Microneedling: 1 to 2 Weeks Before
Microneedling is an amazing treatment for improving fine lines, texture, pores, acne scars, and overall skin quality. But because I'm intentionally creating tiny micro-injuries in the skin, your skin needs time to recover.
Immediately after treatment, you'll have some redness, warmth, tightness, and sensitivity. Some people also experience mild peeling, flaking, or dryness over the following several days. It feels similar to a sunburn.
Best timing: Schedule your microneedling treatment at least 7 to 14 days before your event. This gives your skin plenty of time to calm down so you can enjoy the post-treatment glow without worrying about visible irritation.
If you're after collagen benefits, extend that time frame. Start your series roughly 6 months out to give your skin time to heal and build collagen between sessions. Learn more about SkinPen microneedling at Horizon.
Pro tip: If you've never had microneedling before, don't schedule your first treatment right before an important event. Give yourself extra time so you know how your skin responds.
Hydrafacial: 2 to 5 Days Before
Looking for fresh, hydrated, glowing skin right before your event? A Hydrafacial is the way to go.
A Hydrafacial combines cleansing, exfoliation, extractions, and hydration in one treatment, leaving skin looking refreshed and radiant. Since there's little to no downtime, it's a solid choice before any special occasion.
Best timing: Schedule your Hydrafacial 2 to 5 days before your event.
It's also a great prep treatment before professional makeup, especially with a dermaplane and an HA Hydralock Booster added on. That's our Platinum Hydrafacial with the dermaplane add-on. Explore our facials.
Pro tip: If you're prone to sensitivity or it's your first Hydrafacial, schedule it a few days ahead instead of the day before.
Dermaplane Facial: 3 to 7 Days Before
Dermaplaning is one of the gentlest forms of exfoliation, and a great exfoliation option during pregnancy. It removes dead skin along with fine vellus hair, aka "peach fuzz," for smoother, softer-looking skin with a beautiful glow.
It also creates a smoother canvas for makeup and helps your skincare products absorb and work better.
Best timing: Schedule your dermaplane facial 3 to 7 days before your event. This gives any temporary redness or sensitivity time to settle while you still enjoy that smooth, polished look.
Pro tip: Avoid trying new products or aggressive treatments right after dermaplaning. Your skin may be more sensitive following exfoliation.
Brow Wax: 3 to 5 Days Before
Freshly waxed brows make a surprisingly big difference in your overall look. One shape versus another can make or break it. But waxing can also leave the skin around your brows temporarily red or irritated.
Best timing: Schedule your brow wax 3 to 5 days before your event. This gives redness and sensitivity time to fade while your brows still look freshly shaped.
If you wax regularly and know your skin responds well, you may be comfortable going a little closer to your event. If you're prone to redness or irritation, give yourself a few extra days.
Pro tip: Don't try a new brow service, or a new provider, for the first time the day before an important event. Make sure you trust your provider to give you the shape you want, and that you know how your skin will react.
Spray Tan: 24 to 48 Hours Before
A spray tan needs time to develop, but booking it too far in advance means it may already be fading by the time your event arrives. There's a science to the solution, and a science to your timing.
Best timing: Schedule your spray tan 24 to 48 hours before your event. This gives your tan time to develop while keeping it fresh and vibrant.
24 hours before your appointment, do your skin prep: exfoliate and shave following your spray tan provider's instructions. After your tan, follow the recommended development time and avoid activities that could cause uneven fading. Try to book it on a day when you have nothing else planned afterward.
Want your glow to last? Here's how to make your spray tan last, and you can book a spray tan at Horizon, now at both our Country Club Plaza and Shawnee locations.
Pro tip: If you've never had a spray tan before, don't experiment with a brand-new solution or shade right before a major event. A trial run is a great idea.
What About Botox and Filler Before an Event?
Injectables need more lead time than a facial. Plan on booking Botox, Dysport, or Daxxify at least 2 to 4 weeks before your event, since results take up to two weeks to fully settle in. That window also leaves time for a touch-up if you need one.
For dermal filler, aim for 2 to 4 weeks out as well. That gives any swelling or bruising time to resolve so you look like yourself, just more rested. Learn more about Botox and filler at Horizon, or see how the options compare in Botox vs. Dysport vs. Daxxify.
Your Event Countdown: A Week-by-Week Plan
Putting it all together, here's a sample timeline for a big event like a wedding:
About 6 months before: Book a consultation and start a microneedling series for collagen.
2 to 4 weeks before: Botox or filler, if they're part of your plan.
1 to 2 weeks before: Your final microneedling treatment.
3 to 7 days before: Dermaplane facial.
3 to 5 days before: Brow wax.
2 to 5 days before: Hydrafacial, ideally a Platinum Hydrafacial with dermaplane.
24 to 48 hours before: Spray tan.
Day of: Gentle cleanser, moisturizer, SPF, and nothing new.
Shorter on time? Start at whichever step matches your calendar, and skip anything with more downtime than you have.
The Golden Rule: Don't Try Something New Right Before Your Event
One of the biggest mistakes I see is saving everything for the last minute.
Your skin is unique, and even treatments described as "zero downtime" can occasionally cause temporary redness, sensitivity, or irritation. If your event is especially important, like a wedding, graduation, or professional photoshoot, give yourself extra time whenever possible.
And remember, more treatments aren't always better. Your provider can help you create a pre-event plan based on your skin, your goals, and how much time you have.
What to Avoid in the 48 Hours Before Your Event
A few things can undo all your prep:
New skincare products. Stick with what your skin already knows.
Aggressive exfoliation or at-home peels. Let your skin stay calm and intact.
Unprotected sun exposure. Sunburn and new redness are the opposite of glowing. Wear SPF daily.
First-time treatments. Anything new belongs on a trial date, not your event week.
Beautiful skin doesn't have to happen overnight. With the right treatments scheduled at the right time, you can walk into your event feeling confident, refreshed, and ready to enjoy the moment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Treatments Before an Event
How far in advance should I get a facial before an event?
It depends on the facial. A Hydrafacial can be done 2 to 5 days before, a dermaplane facial 3 to 7 days before, and microneedling at least 7 to 14 days before. If it's your first time trying a facial, give yourself extra time.
How long before a wedding should I start skin treatments?
Ideally about 6 months out. That gives you time for a microneedling series to build collagen, plus room to schedule injectables, facials, waxing, and your spray tan in the right order.
Can I get microneedling a week before my event?
Yes, as long as you've had microneedling before and know how your skin responds. Seven days is the minimum. Fourteen days is safer, especially for very important events or sensitive skin.
When should I get a Hydrafacial before an event?
Two to five days before. There's little to no downtime, so you'll get a fresh, hydrated glow. If your skin is sensitive or it's your first Hydrafacial, book closer to five days out.
Is dermaplaning safe during pregnancy?
Dermaplaning is one of the gentlest exfoliation options and is a popular choice during pregnancy. Always let your provider know you're pregnant so they can tailor your treatment.
How many days before an event should I wax my brows?
Three to five days before. That gives redness time to fade while your brows still look freshly shaped. If you're prone to irritation, go a few days earlier.
When should I get a spray tan before an event?
24 to 48 hours before. That gives your tan time to fully develop without starting to fade. Exfoliate and shave the day before your appointment.
How long before an event should I get Botox?
At least 2 to 4 weeks before. Results take up to two weeks to fully settle, and that window leaves time for a touch-up if needed.
