Compare CO2 laser resurfacing and Morpheus8 RF microneedling for acne scars, wrinkles, and skin tightening. Expert guidance from Horizon Med Spa in Kansas City.

If you're looking to improve acne scars, wrinkles, skin texture, or skin laxity, you have likely heard about two treatments: the CO2 laser and Morpheus8. Both stimulate collagen production and improve skin quality, but they work in very different ways.

So which treatment is right for you?

The answer depends on your skin concerns, how much downtime you can allow, and your desired result. At Horizon Med Spa & Wellness in Kansas City, we offer both treatments, and in this guide I'll walk you through how to decide which one is the best fit for you (or maybe both) by comparing them side by side.

What Is a Fractionated CO2 Laser?

A fractionated CO2 laser is the gold standard for laser skin resurfacing. Rather than fully ablating the skin, it creates tens of thousands of microscopic dots that form a controlled injury. This helps the surrounding tissue heal faster while stimulating collagen and elastin in the skin.

It also works by helping control melanocytes, which are pigmented skin cells. That means it can stop pigment from coming to the surface and help correct premature sun damage. Because it stimulates collagen and elasticity, CO2 laser resurfacing is highly known for improving acne scars, surgical scars, crepey skin, and textural issues on the surface of the skin.

One of my favorite things about this laser is how precise I can be with it. Along with everything mentioned above, I can also treat benign lesions like seborrheic keratoses, skin tags, and moles. This is often a safer option than getting things frozen off if you are prone to hypopigmentation.

The CO2 laser is a great option for anyone looking to stimulate collagen and address textural concerns, sun damage, and acne scars.

What Is Morpheus8?

Morpheus8 is a microneedling device that delivers radiofrequency (RF) energy.

Morpheus8 is the true head honcho of RF microneedling. It holds a patent on its radiofrequency technology, so other devices don't stand a chance. I have personally operated other devices on the market, and the comparison is unmatched.

RF microneedling uses tiny needles to penetrate the skin and deliver electromagnetic energy that tightens and remodels deeper layers of tissue. It's great for all skin types and truly customizable to your anatomy. For example, if you have more fat or pinchable skin underneath your chin, we can use specific settings to help contour you. If you don't have that pinchable skin, we can use lower RF energy and shallower depths to make sure we are only tightening, not debulking. Moral of the story: Morpheus8 is the gold standard for tightening your underlying structures.

The prime candidates for this treatment are those with skin laxity, early signs of aging, and anyone wanting better jawline definition. It's also the better choice for patients wanting a quick turnaround with minimal downtime.

Which Is Better for Acne Scars?

For moderate to severe acne scars, I recommend the CO2 laser. The laser resurfaces the top layer of skin and remodels underneath it, which helps with boxcar and ice pick scarring as well as textural irregularities. CO2 handpieces can treat very small or large spot sizes at different depths and densities, so we can truly customize how we treat those areas and blend everything well.

Morpheus8 can also help with acne scarring, but for more severe cases, CO2 is my go-to as a provider.

Which Is Better for Skin Laxity?

Morpheus8 takes the cake here.

Morpheus8 thrives on all things loose skin. It reaches deeper layers and creates ablation deeper into the skin, which helps more with heavy laxity. This includes jowling and the laxity that develops as we lose fat in the face during the aging process.

Which Is Better for Texture and Wrinkles?

If you look in the mirror and see etched-in lines that aren't going to change with something like a neurotoxin, you're going to want laser resurfacing. This is especially important for fine lines around the eyes and mouth.

Which Is Better for Loose Skin on the Abdomen?

Drastic weight loss or changes in skin quality from having babies can definitely leave us with loose skin. Sometimes it's simply skin laxity as we age. Morpheus8 is ideal for this because of the dermal heat it creates with radiofrequency energy.

Morpheus8 can treat almost anywhere on the body. Some of the most common areas are the abdomen, arms, thighs, and buttocks.

What About Downtime?

Downtime truly looks different for everyone. And what does downtime mean to you?

Morpheus8 downtime: Redness for 24 to 48 hours, with no working out or alcohol during that window. Skin may feel a little dry for up to a week, and you should pause active ingredients in your skincare routine. Generally speaking, there isn't a ton of swelling, and it's a very quick turnaround.

CO2 laser downtime: A bit more recovery since it treats the surface of the skin. You can expect slight swelling, some redness or a bronze appearance for 3 to 4 days, and rough texture for 5 to 7 days. If you are concerned about downtime, we offer a series of baby resurfacing treatments, also known as a SOL peel, which changes the downtime quite a bit. Plan to stay off active skincare ingredients for 7 to 10 days.

Can You Combine CO2 Laser and Morpheus8?

Absolutely! We highly recommend combining the two treatments if you struggle with multiple concerns. In fact, our premium Morpheus8 package includes a light resurfacing.

The treatments can be combined in the same appointment on the same day, which means fewer trips to the office and less downtime in the long run.
