Battle of the Bulge: How to Reduce Stubborn Belly Fat

IN THIS BLOG POST:
I think it’s safe to assume that just about every woman has worried about their weight at some point. And many of us battle this our entire lives. Despite the bountiful messages for us to love ourselves and appreciate the skin we are in, we still manage to allow our own perception of our body to influence how we feel about ourselves in general. I’m guilty of this to this day. When I feel “fat” I’m cranky, irritable, and I avoid social activities because everything I try on makes me feel awful. Can anyone relate?
And it’s not just about your weight. It’s also the shape your body is now. You may have managed to drop a few pounds and you feel pretty feel good about that, but chances are you are not about to put that bikini on and run on the beach like Pamela Anderson in Bay Watch. Despite the carb cutting, power cycling, and Tracy Anderson ab workouts… your midsection serves as a constant reminder that you just aren’t 20 anymore no matter how much weight you lose.
Increased belly fat is directly related to a number of things like genetics, hormones, stress levels, sleep, and what type of foods you eat. This blog looks at the different things that contribute to increased belly fat and what you can do about it. I feel pretty good in a bikini, and I want you to too.
So, even though I said it’s not all about diet and exercise, that doesn’t mean we abandon them entirely. They are still important and crucial to your overall success, and they create the foundation for everything else we’ll talk about.
Diet and belly fat: what to change first
Are you tired of hearing “calories in, calories out” yet? Yes, there is some truth to this. If you consume more calories than you expend, you will store more fat.
However, it’s not always quite that simple. For some people, it’s good news. It means that while you’ve been starving yourself and not losing any weight (or gaining in some cases), you can have hope that there is likely another solution to reducing some waistline inches.
For others, this is bad news, because losing weight and maintaining your weight loss isn’t as simple as just eating less. It’s a little more complex than that. There’s storing fat, and there’s where you store fat that matters.
The types of food you eat can directly increase your belly fat, in addition to the quantity of calories you eat. Here are a list of foods that commonly contribute to abdominal fat gain and bloating:
Foods That Commonly Contribute To Belly Fat and Bloating
Refined carbohydrates
Fried and processed foods
Sugary foods and drinks
Alcohol
If you notice persistent belly bloating, sugar cravings, or fatigue, those can be clues to look beyond calories and consider gut health and cortisol.
Exercise for belly fat: cardio + strength training
In my professional experience, I find that people give up on exercise before they get to the good part. Yes, exercise is hard. It’s supposed to be. Exercise, when done right, is essentially sending a message to our body to evolve into something better. The rewards of a good exercise routine are bountiful.
It’s not just about looking good. It elevates mood, increases energy, improves cognition, extends your health span, and reduces your risk of many, many medical problems.
Cardio for fat loss (what it can and cannot do)
Cardio is going to directly improve your heart function, energy level, cognition, and it will help you lose weight overall. It can’t target a specific area like your butt, abs, or arms. Generally speaking, you will lose the same percentage of fat out of your stomach as the back of your hand.
Notice I said percentage, not amount. This means that since there is a greater amount of fat in your belly than the back of your hand, you can expect to see more of a change there.
Strength training for body composition and metabolism

Strength training can be targeted. If I focus on core exercises and my abs, I can expect to get a direct result from that (stronger core and more muscle tone). Building muscle mass also increases your resting metabolic rate, meaning you burn more calories at rest when you have more muscle mass.
You really can’t do one without the other and expect a solid result. To have muscle tone in your abs, you have to build it. But no matter how hard you work, if you have a thick layer of fat over it, it won’t show.
Here’s the good news: alternating cardio and strength training allows variety so you don’t get bored or burned out, and it gets you closer to your goal while improving overall health.
Back to what I said about people giving up on exercise before they get to the good part: getting to that point takes time. Be patient and stay consistent.
One last thing on exercise: let’s talk about exercise vs. activity. I have had hundreds of patients tell me “but I walk every day” when discussing their health as it relates to weight management and exercise.
Don’t get me wrong, walking is good. Any activity is better than no activity. However, your body adapts to what it does regularly. Your body requires a challenge to change.
I’ll say it one last time: exercise should be hard, but it’s worth it. And combining a regimen of both resistance training and cardio can get you that much closer to a tight and toned tummy.
Gut dysbiosis and belly bloating
Sounds so fancy and medical. Anyway, our gut is a garden of both good and bad bacteria. The goal is to have a healthy balance of both.
Balance, in this situation, means there’s more good than bad. There is a domino effect with this one. An imbalanced gut disrupts the intestinal lining leading to chronic low grade systemic inflammation. This can affect cortisol levels (more on this later), increase appetite and cravings, negatively impact hormone regulation, and increase insulin resistance.
Not to mention abdominal bloating which distends the abdomen and just isn’t cute.
Getting your gut balanced is so, so important. Not only do you feel a thousand times better, but it also makes everything else we are going to talk about go more smoothly.
If you have a disrupted gut, you may feel tired and have brain fog. And no one feeling like that is motivated to get up and exercise or meal prep.
I recommend the Total Gut Restoration Kit by Microbiome Labs. You can purchase online or buy in stock at Horizon Med Spa and Wellness in Shawnee, KS or Kansas City, MO.
If you want to explore the gut-stress connection more deeply, you can read about Horizon’s Gut Health & Cortisol services, review the NIH’s overview of probiotics and gut health, and learn why visceral fat matters in this Harvard Health guide to belly fat.
Cortisol and stress: how it affects belly fat
It seems that cortisol gets a bad rap. Cortisol is a good thing. It’s what wakes us up in the morning with the energy to take on the day. It’s also part of the fight or flight system.
Cortisol is supposed to be higher in the morning when we wake and then gradually decline throughout the day to low in the evening.
The problem is when cortisol stays high all day and into the evening affecting our ability to wind down. Or when it’s consistently low making it difficult to get up in the morning and leaving you tired and drained all day.
If you are getting your cortisol checked, make sure it’s with a provider who really knows how to read cortisol levels. Ideally, it should be checked at multiple intervals during the day to look at the curve.
Elevated cortisol can increase blood sugar, increase insulin, and promote fat storage. Cortisol is also catabolic, meaning at prolonged high levels it can break down muscle mass reducing lean mass over time. It can also increase appetite for sugar and high fat foods.
To make matters worse, elevated cortisol in the evening disrupts sleep which elevates cortisol even more (vicious cycle), impairs insulin sensitivity, and increases hunger.
So we can see why cortisol gets a bad rap. It’s just important to know that maintaining a healthy cortisol curve is the solution, not eliminating cortisol altogether.
If you suspect stress and poor sleep are contributing to stubborn belly fat, Horizon’s Gut Health & Cortisol consult can help you get clear on next steps. For general guidance, see the CDC’s sleep basics and Mayo Clinic’s overview of stress and its effects.
Medical weight loss in Kansas City (GLP-1 options)
I am a huge advocate for GLP-1 use. GLP-1s can reduce appetite and cravings and better regulate blood sugar. A GLP-1 slows gastric emptying which delays food leaving the stomach and entering the intestine. The result is you are fuller faster and fuller longer.
It can entirely change your relationship with food. Foods you once craved may become less interesting. You also aren’t ever “starving,” which often leads to poor diet choices to satisfy hunger pains.

People often describe it as “reducing the food noise.”
It’s important to think of a GLP-1 medication as a tool and not a whole solution. If you just rely on a GLP-1 medication to lose weight you can be successful in the short term, but you’ll be reliant on it (and may gain weight back when you stop) and you can lose muscle mass.
If you use it like a tool to achieve better lifestyle habits, you can be wildly successful.
Reducing calories, eating better, regulating blood sugar, and reducing inflammation can greatly help reduce the belly bulge.
If you want to get started with this, I strongly recommend seeing a qualified and experienced health care provider who will do a comprehensive assessment and lab panel.

Hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) and body composition
Did you know that low testosterone is strongly linked to increased belly fat? Did you also know that women need testosterone, not just men?
Testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone work together to control metabolism, sleep, brain function, energy, and mood. As we get older, all three of these hormones naturally decline, further contributing to feeling old, tired, fat, and sluggish.
Balancing and optimizing your hormones is something I highly recommend for immediate and long term goals.
I also recommend scheduling an appointment with a qualified and experienced provider if you’d like to look into whether BHRT (bioidentical hormone replacement therapy) is right for you.
Radiofrequency treatments for stubborn belly fat + loose skin
Maybe you’ve heard this word. If not, read on. Radiofrequency offers a great solution to stubborn fat and loose skin, which can be a byproduct of weight loss.
When the appropriate depth and settings are chosen, radiofrequency can shrink fat cells and tighten skin simultaneously in targeted areas.
As a clinical trainer and speaker for InMode, I will speak about their modalities specifically.
Morpheus8 (RF microneedling) for abdomen tightening and contouring
Morpheus8 is microneedling with radiofrequency. The needles penetrate the skin (numbed, of course) and deliver RF from the tip of the needles.
The benefit of this is while the RF is being delivered at the target depth, all layers of the skin benefit. RF in the upper layers of the skin promotes needed cell turnover and collagen production.
Morpheus8 provides a mild to moderate reduction in excess volume (fat) in the targeted area.
You can read more about Microneedling + Radiofrequency (Morpheus8) at Horizon, including common treatment areas like the abdomen.
QuantumRF for more significant volume reduction without liposuction
Quantum is also RF, but delivered more aggressively and deeper into the skin to provide a more impressive reduction in volume without liposuction.
Quantum is performed in the office with local anesthesia and is a fairly quick procedure. It is commonly combined with Morpheus8 to collectively address both the upper and deeper layers of skin and fat.
Patients can expect to start to see results in about 6 weeks, but best results are often seen at about 6 months.
BodyTite (RF-assisted lipo) for the most aggressive fat reduction
This is the most aggressive form of radiofrequency and is combined with liposuction to provide a more drastic reduction in abdominal fat. This is also combined with Morpheus8 to address all layers of the skin.
Deciding which RF treatment is best should be discussed in person with an experienced provider.
Where to begin (Kansas City + Shawnee, KS)
Well, that was a lot. Hopefully you feel encouraged, hopeful, motivated, and equipped.
If you are near Kansas City, I recommend you schedule an appointment with Kim at Horizon Med Spa and Wellness (either at our Shawnee or Kansas City Plaza location) for a wellness consult and personalized plan.
FAQs About Losing Belly Fat
What causes stubborn belly fat in women?
Belly fat is influenced by genetics, hormones, insulin resistance, gut health, sleep quality, stress and cortisol levels, nutrition, and activity level.
Why do I gain belly fat even when I am dieting?
If stress, sleep disruption, hormone imbalance, inflammation, or insulin resistance are present, you can feel like you are “doing everything right” and still see limited progress.
What is visceral fat and why does it matter?
Visceral fat is fat stored around internal organs. It is linked to metabolic and cardiovascular risk, and it often responds well to a consistent plan that includes strength training, nutrition, and medical support when appropriate.
Can cortisol really cause belly fat?
Elevated or dysregulated cortisol can impact blood sugar, appetite, cravings, sleep, and muscle mass, all of which can contribute to abdominal fat over time.
Do GLP-1 medications help with stubborn belly fat?
GLP-1 medications support weight loss by reducing appetite and cravings and improving blood sugar regulation. They are most effective when paired with nutrition and strength training to preserve lean mass.
What is the best non-surgical treatment for loose abdominal skin?
Radiofrequency treatments such as Morpheus8 and other RF technologies can support skin tightening and contouring. The best option depends on your anatomy, goals, and downtime preferences.
