Breck Moore is a Medical Aesthetician at Horizon Med Spa and Wellness.

My name is Breck and I have been a Medical Aesthetician for over 10 years now. I have experience in Dermatology, Plastic Surgery, and Wellness offices. The hardest time to correct the skin is often in the summer. There are numerous reasons for that (the kids are out of school especially), most commonly being sun exposure. Most of our patients are traveling, at the lake, pool, and in the sun. When patients become too tan, I am unable to perform certain treatments on them. The other part of that is the downtime with some of the treatments. We are busy this season! Below are a few of my favorite summer skincare treatments that have minimal downtime, and the guidelines of how you can still reach your skin goals while the sun is shining (with sunscreen, obviously).

HydraFacial: The Ultimate Year-Round Skin Maintenance Treatment

This is pretty much a no brainer - HydraFacials are tried and true for year round skin maintenance. I always tell my patients that this is like a car wash or a good power washing for your face, haha! It is a good way to think about it. We are sucking out all of the gunk in the skin (sunscreen, oil, sweat, build up). Exfoliating with glycolic and salicylic acid for a no peel or downtime effect. We use our tiny blue tip to extract even more out of your T- Zone. All of our facials come with LED light therapy, and after that we infuse all of the hydrating antioxidants and boosters back into your skin to leave you feeling refreshed. There is no downtime with a HydraFacial, which is why it makes the perfect summer treatment in Kansas City.

Why HydraFacial Is Perfect for Summer Skin

SkinPen Microneedling: FDA-Approved Collagen Stimulation for Summer Skin

What SkinPen Microneedling Treats

SkinPen is another one of my personal favorites. I am sure if you have read any of my previous blogs that you know it is a treatment I keep up with. Microneedling was originally brought around to address acne scarring. This is why SkinPen was FDA approved for it, originally. SkinPen microneedling is used to treat fine lines, wrinkles, texture, pore size, and also I use it as a preventative anti-aging treatment. Clinical studies show that Skinpen can create 3 million microchannels in your skin in just one session. This is going to tell your brain that there is an injury to the skin and that it needs to stimulate new collagen and elasticity to repair the skin, leaving your concerns behind. It is best in a series of 3 treatments initially with just 1-2 maintenance treatments a year. I noticed after one maintenance treatment it always helps with post inflammatory erythema/hyper pigmentation (aka those little dark or red spots after you have a bad break out). It also leaves my skin feeling and looking so rejuvenated and glowy!

Microneedling Downtime and Summer Scheduling

Lets talk about the downtime associated with SkinPen; You will want to avoid direct sun exposure, tanning, swimming, exfoliation, retinol, waxing, etc. for about 5-7 days. This is going to give the skin plenty of time to heal and repair itself. You will be red for just the first few days, and maybe a little dry and flaky for a few more. Most people who receive this treatment on a Monday are fine and ready to hit the town by the weekend. This is also a perfect treatment to work into your summer schedule in Kansas City.

Why Dermaplaning Works Year-Round

Dermaplaning also does not make the skin more susceptible to the sun, so it is perfect for summer as well, especially for Kansas City residents enjoying outdoor activities.

Morpheus8: Advanced RF Microneedling for Skin Tightening

How Morpheus8 Works

We just learned about Microneedling in the few paragraphs above this, now let's talk about Morpheus. Morpheus8 is a Radio Frequency Microneedling device. This is for my more mature clientele, or people who have loose or sagging skin. So if you are someone who hates the appearance of their jowls, loose neck, saggy arms, and stretched out tummy, this is for you. The Radio Frequency is really the secret weapon here. The needles go into the skin and emit the RF heat. The heat works to tighten existing collagen fiber and accelerate the remodeling of new collagen. Radiofrequency energy when used at the correct depth, can also address stubborn subcutaneous fat. For example, stubborn under the chin fat, or undesired spots of the body. This is generally pretty subtle, but really gives a sculpted look. This is also done safely and as a provider, I know when and where to use these settings for best efficacy.

Morpheus8 Downtime and Recovery

This treatment also has very similar downtime to regular microneedling, which makes it easy to work around your lifestyle this season.

Laser Hair Removal: Summer Treatment Guidelines for Safe Results

Understanding How Laser Hair Removal Works

I always explain to people that lasers are attracted to color. This is why it works so well when your hair is dark because the laser hair removal handpiece focuses the energy on the color of the hair. When we become tan or our skin gets too dark, there is a risk that the laser will mistake the color of the skin and not the hair, leading to a negative complication.

Best Treatment Areas for Summer

That being said, this treatment is more area dependent. Places like inside your bikini line, under arms, and maybe your face do not get as tan or exposed to the sun. These areas are safe to treat in the summer time due to minimal sun exposure. If you are someone who does not generally tan or go in the sun much, this shouldn't be a problem for you and you are safe to treat. Laser hair removal treatments are 4-6 weeks apart so it is easy to plan around travel!

Sun Safety: Essential Summer Skincare Protection Tips

Protecting Your Skin Investment

Lastly, I have to end this blog with the preaching about how to keep yourself safe from the sun. I recommend a hat on always, wide brim if you will be outdoors for long periods of time. SPF 50 sunscreen is always a must, 30 is the minimum. By keeping your skin protected you are ensuring the money spent on your skin treatments does not go to waste. Consistent sun protection is essential for maintaining results from aesthetic treatments and preventing premature aging. If you aren't sure about which route to take, always schedule an appointment with us at Horizon Medical Spa and Wellness.

Frequently Asked Questions About Summer Skin Treatments

Can I get a HydraFacial before a special event?

Absolutely! HydraFacials have zero downtime and will leave your skin glowing immediately. Many of our Kansas City clients schedule their HydraFacial treatment the day before weddings, photoshoots, or important events. The treatment cleanses, exfoliates, and hydrates your skin in just one hour, making it the perfect pre-event treatment.

How long do I need to wait after microneedling before going back in the sun?

You should avoid direct sun exposure for 5-7 days after SkinPen microneedling treatments. This gives your skin adequate time to heal and prevents complications like hyperpigmentation. When you do go outside, always wear SPF 50 sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat for the first two weeks following treatment.

Is Morpheus8 better than regular microneedling?

Morpheus8 and SkinPen microneedling serve different purposes. Morpheus8 combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy, making it ideal for more mature skin with concerns about laxity, sagging, and deeper wrinkles. SkinPen microneedling is excellent for acne scarring, fine lines, texture, and preventative anti-aging. During your consultation at Horizon Med Spa, we can determine which treatment best addresses your specific skin goals.

Can I tan before laser hair removal treatments?

No, you should avoid tanning before laser hair removal. Lasers target pigment in the hair follicle, and when your skin is tan, the laser may target your skin instead of the hair, potentially causing burns or complications. However, areas that don't get sun exposure like the bikini line, underarms, and sometimes the face can be safely treated during summer months.

What should I avoid after getting a medical facial or dermaplaning?

After medical facials and dermaplaning treatments, avoid harsh exfoliants, retinol, and direct sun exposure for 24-48 hours. Always wear sunscreen when going outdoors. The good news is that dermaplaning does not make your skin more sensitive to the sun like some other treatments, making it an excellent summer option.

How do I know which summer skin treatment is right for me?

The best way to determine which treatment suits your needs is to schedule a consultation with our medical aestheticians at Horizon Med Spa in Kansas City. We'll evaluate your skin type, concerns, lifestyle, and summer schedule to recommend treatments that will deliver the best results with appropriate downtime for your needs.
