Even the healthiest version of you can experience collagen loss, volume loss, and changes in skin quality over time. Here's why it happens, and how we help you age better instead of chasing perfect.

IN THIS BLOG POST:

2026 is definitely the year of healthy living. We've seen a huge uptick in interest in things like peptides, GLP-1s, and every way to achieve the healthiest version of yourself. But even when people are feeling their healthiest, they don't always feel like they look the same when it comes to their skin.

When we change our body composition, we often start to notice different changes on our exterior. This could be anything from dullness or dryness to loose skin, or maybe feeling hollow in your temples. So if you're someone who is working out, drinking plenty of water, getting your hormones back in balance, eating healthy, or maybe you just hit your goal weight, this is your aesthetic guide. Even the healthiest of people experience collagen loss, volume loss, and changes in skin quality over time.

What Causes the Skin to Age?

Aging is an inevitable part of being human. As we get older, the composition of our skin changes.

Collagen and Volume Loss Over Time

We start to lose collagen every year after we hit our twenties, and it declines even more once we hit 30 and beyond. Our skin gets thinner, the fat pads in our cheeks get heavier and look like they're trying to slide down (which gives us jowls), and our healing slows down due to slower cell turnover. When cell turnover slows, our skin appears more dull, and our sebum secretion also slows, which is the oil our skin produces.

Sun Damage Adds Up

Sun damage accumulates over the years. Most of the damage popping up in your 40s actually happened in your 20s. And sun damage presents itself in more ways than one. You may think it's just the pigment, but it's also broken capillaries and texture changes. Fun fact: 80 to 90% of our skin damage comes from extrinsic factors like sun exposure.

Lifestyle Stressors

Lifestyle stressors can greatly affect the skin too. Stress, poor sleep, alcohol, nicotine use, weight change, and hormones can all take a toll on how our skin looks and feels.

Signs Your Skin Is Aging Beyond Fine Lines

There will come a day when you start to feel like your skin is going downhill. Maybe you notice that the lines under your eyes are no longer "fine." Maybe you lost 60 pounds and that skin is more lax instead of smooth.

Signs you're getting to the point of "beyond fine lines" include:

  • More texture and enlarged pores

  • Under-eye and temple hollowness

  • Lips that start looking a little shriveled or thinner

  • Your makeup settling differently than it used to

Why We Focus on Skin Quality

We provide natural skin rejuvenation in Kansas City, leaning away from ever looking overfilled or puffy. We pride ourselves on facial balancing with dermal fillers and using a biostimulator like Sculptra. As an office, we always recommend focusing on skin quality, healthier skin, and looking and feeling refreshed, not "done."

The Best Treatments for Healthier, Younger-Looking Skin

CO2 Laser (and the SOL Peel)

CO2 lasers are the gold standard for treating superficial skin concerns like texture, wrinkles, fine lines, pore size, and scarring. They work by ablating tiny dots on the skin to stimulate new collagen and smooth everything out. This can also be done as a lighter treatment called a SOL Peel, which means less downtime depending on your goals. Keep in mind you may need to complete a series of three with the SOL Peel.

Neurotoxins: Botox, Dysport & DAXXIFY

Neurotoxins (aka Dysport, Botox, and DAXXIFY) play a vital role and are a huge confidence booster. They work to slow muscle movement, which smooths the skin and stops expressive lines in their tracks. There are so many different uses for neurotoxins, and we can't wait to tell you all about them in your consultation.

SkinPen

SkinPen is a fan favorite for people who are new to aesthetics. It's a very easy, low-downtime way to stimulate collagen and address texture and fine lines. I use this in more mild cases of aging, and it's really good as a preventative treatment for those in their 20s and 30s.

Morpheus8

Morpheus8 is my absolute go-to if your concerns are jowls or loose skin. It can be performed on both the face and the body. This is something I see performed a lot after weight loss or a change in body composition, as well as postpartum. Most people with laxity in the 45+ age group benefit from this treatment greatly.

Sculptra

Sculptra is very popular in our office, as mentioned above. It works by injecting a biostimulator into areas that have lost volume or skin thickness. It's incredibly effective for people who have lean muscle mass, have little to no fat, have lost a lot of weight, or naturally have hollowness in their face.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are used to balance the face as we age, or to fill in areas of volume loss. They can give you cheek support, lip fullness, and under-eye support. They can also be used to sharpen the jawline and elongate the chin. Our injectors are obsessed with facial balancing, and you should be too.

Building Your At-Home Routine for Longevity

During your appointments, we'll always check in with you on your home routine. Using products like retinoids, vitamin C, sunscreen, and elasticity support (aka our Elastiderm line from Obagi) will help set you up for longevity. Great skin quality is built at home just as much as it is in the treatment room.

Aging Better Instead of Chasing Perfection

Aging better instead of chasing perfection is our specialty here in Kansas City. We want you to feel like yourself, but refreshed, and confident about the work you've put in. Living a healthy lifestyle should reflect on the exterior too.

If you're noticing changes in your skin while going through a wellness journey or navigating the aging process, let's chat. Book a consultation at our Shawnee or Kansas City Plaza location and we'll build a plan that fits exactly where you are.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my skin look older after weight loss even though I'm healthier?

Losing weight or changing your body composition often reveals volume and collagen loss that was there all along. As fat pads shrink and skin loses elasticity, you may notice more laxity, hollow temples, or a tired look, even when you feel your best. Treatments like Sculptra and Morpheus8 are designed to restore that volume and firmness naturally.

What is the best treatment for loose skin after weight loss?

For jowls and skin laxity, Morpheus8 is one of our favorites because it tightens skin on both the face and body. For volume and thickness loss, we often pair it with Sculptra. The right combination depends on your goals, which we'll map out together at your consultation.

Can you treat volume loss and hollow temples in the face?

Yes. Sculptra and dermal fillers are both excellent for restoring volume and supporting areas like the temples, cheeks, and under-eyes. Our approach is always facial balancing, so you look refreshed and never overfilled.

Do I need injectables to look refreshed, or can skin quality treatments help?

You don't have to start with injectables. Skin quality treatments like CO2 laser, SkinPen, and a strong at-home routine can make a big difference in texture, tone, and glow on their own. We always meet you where you are and focus on healthier skin first.

What treatments are best for prevention in your 20s and 30s?

SkinPen is a great preventative option for stimulating collagen with minimal downtime, and neurotoxins can soften expressive lines before they set in. Pair those with retinoids, vitamin C, and daily sunscreen at home to protect the collagen you already have.
